Camera Language in AI Video

Framing, lens behavior, and movement as continuity tools, not decorative cinema words.

Question

Camera language in AI video constrains how the model observes the world. It is not there to make the prompt sound professional. Many failures begin with an undefined camera: the model does not know whether to hold its distance, push in, orbit, reveal something, or simply drift.

Observation

The word "cinematic" is too broad. A model may interpret it as shallow depth of field, film color, high-contrast light, or an image resembling a production still. Specific camera behavior is more useful:

hold
slow push-in
locked-off wide shot
low-angle tracking
over-the-shoulder reveal

These terms define a viewing relationship. Camera distance shapes the audience's psychological distance from a character. Focal length compresses or opens up space. Movement determines how information is revealed.

Method

I write camera instructions in three parts:

FRAMING: medium close-up, character stays frame left
LENS: 50mm, shallow depth of field, background compressed
MOVEMENT: slow push-in over five seconds, no orbit, no handheld shake

The purpose is to reduce drift. When the model freely chooses camera movement, it can confuse a change in composition with a change in content: character positions shift, spatial direction changes, and prop relationships move with them.

Boundary

Camera language can stabilize how a single shot is viewed, but it cannot define the story by itself. A low-angle tracking shot can make a character imposing without establishing their motivation. Camera language needs an event:

wrong: slow push-in, cinematic, dramatic
better: slow push-in as she notices the missing letter

The reason for the action matters more than the camera term. Movement should serve a change in information.

Lab Note

Whenever I write an AI video prompt, I ask four questions:

Who is the camera following?
What should remain in frame?
What information is revealed by the movement?
What must not change during the move?

If these questions have no answers, the camera prompt is only decoration.
